Cooling element gains special recognition at international pressure casting contest 2012

During the opening ceremony of Euroguss in Nuremberg on January 16th 2012 this year’s prize winner of the International Aluminum Pressure Casting Contest was awarded. The Moneva Foundry received special recognition for a casting incorporating a cooling element used in hybrid technology. The Jury of Research and Science praised the value of the innovation and high requirements within the casting industry.

The cast component will be an important step for hybrid technology to help solve a cooling problem encountered with battery technology. The casting incorporates a cooling tube within the aluminum casting, composed of a different aluminum alloy. This technology allows for the substitution with this casting for the parts previous constructed multiple sheets of material and enabling a considerable cost savings.

Drahtzug Stein opened its first production location in the U.S.

After its European expansion strategy, Drahtzug Stein made it over the Atlantic Ocean in 2009: the new site of Drahtzug Stein usa Corp. in New Bern, North Carolina started its production. Here on Bosch Boulevard dishwasher baskets for the appliance industry are produced.

Drahtzug Stein usa Corp. had already been founded in 2007.
In 2008, renovations and maintenance works of the building began; machines and tools were ordered. At the same time, the training of the German employees started.

In February 2009, machines and tools were shipped from Europe to the United States. The build-up and test run of these machines took place in March/April. The direct marketing of welding consumables via the location in New Bern has also started in 2009.

As the internationally leading manufacturer of wire goods for the appliance industry, Drahtzug Stein delivers to the neighboring plant of B/S/H (Bosch and Siemens home appliances). The production location just opposite the street of B/S/H enables Drahtzug Stein to deliver “Just in Sequence” (JIS).

As sole supplier for B/S/H at the location in New Bern, Drahtzug Stein produces dishwasher baskets in two shifts. The number of employees of 33 people in June 2009 has already doubled within one year. Drahtzug Stein usa currently employs 67 people in New Bern (October 2010).

Combicore lost tube cores acknowledged at 2010 NoAE Innovation Competition

Robust aluminium insert pipes are an innovation for the automotive industry.

Drahtzug Stein combicore is among 30 award winners who presented themselves for the first time at the “2010 Würzburg Automobile Summit” on 24 November 2010. This year’s Network of Automotive Excellence (NoAE) award attracted more than 420 registered participants from 23 countries. The summit was held under the patronage of German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Rainer Brüderle.

For the fourth time since its inception, the annual NoAE competition acknowledged innovative new ideas for the automotive industry with focus on high customer benefit, innovative power and product performance.
At their plant in Altleiningen, Drahtzug Stein combicore produce patented core products based on filled pipes for foundry applications. Their insert pipes implement oil, water and cooling channels in different castings as, e.g., engine blocks or gearbox housings. The compacted filling inside the pipe provides for stability during the casting process – even where casting pressure reaches levels above 1,000 bar. This allows the use of aluminium pipes that would be bulged without a filling.

combicore insert pipes enable an efficient, flexible production and support the implementation of lightweight castings – saving energy and resources. The pipe follows the geometry of the casting and allows for a near-shape casting process with significant material savings.

The NoAE jury includes a total of 30 members, among them innovation managers, senior development engineers and other experts along with 12 representatives of leading car manufacturers. Via the NoAE online platform, the competition project was published in 10 different languages; in 2010, Canada was the official partner of the industry-wide competition.
NoAE (www.noae.com ) is a cross-company initiative with the aim to strengthen the competitiveness and future potential of the European automotive and supplier industries. The NoAE’s organisation is based on project initiatives and has been founded by well-known experts of the automotive industry with the support of European Commission. NoAE is a national partner of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology’s Kompetenznetze Deutschland initiative.
On 17 March 2011, the 30 NoAE award winners will be presented to the public again on the occasion of an international Electric Mobility event in Düsseldorf, Germany.

2010 Material Efficiency Award goes to Combicore lost tube cores

Robust aluminium insert pipes save energy and resources.

At the conference titled “With the efficient use of resources on the road to success – practical experience and research pave the way” on 17 November 2010 in Berlin, Drahtzug Stein combicore were acknowledged for their creative and innovative casting technolo gy concepts. More than 100 conference participants witnessed the combicore team receiving the award that includes prize money of €10,000 at a ceremony held at the premises of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) in Berlin.

”Efficient producers win!” emphasised Jochen Homann, State Secretary at the BMWi. The efficient use of material pays off within short periods, he continued.  Intelligent solutions allow to permanently save raw materials and operating supplies. “This creates a clear competitive edge,” added Homann.

At their plant in Altleiningen, Drahtzug Stein combicore produce innovative core products for foundries. Their insert pipes implement oil, water and cooling channels in different castings as, e.g., engine blocks or gearbox housings. The compacted filling inside the pipe provides for stability during the casting process. This allows the use of aluminium pipes that would be bulged without a filling.

Filled combicore insert pipes are pulled through a drawing die, bent to the desired shape and – if required – further formed by stamping. After casting, the ecological moulding material can be removed on an environmentally friendly and resource-saving way. This process can be supported by a wire helix placed into the pipe.
combicore aluminium insert pipes are an economically reasonable and proven alternative to the traditionally used thick-walled steel pipes or chip-removing methods and sliders. The aluminium pipes produced by Drahtzug Stein combicore offer their customers numerous competitive advantages:

The pipe follows the geometry of the casting and allows for a near-shape casting process with significant material savings. This enables the construction of innovative and very lightweight castings and the general implementation of a consistent lightweight design.

The pipes match the molten metal and have a comparable temperature coefficient of expansion (TCE). Additionally, the final processing of the castings becomes easier as aluminium pipes are softer than steel pipes. This reduces the required efforts, provides for less wear and tear of the tools and saves energy.
combicore insert pipes are the first of their kind worldwide and are patent-protected; they are suitable for high-pressure aluminium die-casting, magnesium casting and other casting methods.

Together with Drahtzug Stein combicore, three other companies and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology were acknowledged for their creative and innovative ideas.
More information about Drahtzug Stein combicore is available in the Internet at www.combicore.de. Besides lost tube cores, Drahtzug Stein also produces flux-cored wire for welding and wire goods for household devices at their plant in Altleiningen (www.drahtzug.de).

A look back at EuroBLECH2010

Review EuroBLECH 2010.

Drahtzug Stein wire & welding was the only core wire manufacturer that presented an own stand at the EuroBLECH2010 trade show. Our first-time appearance at the show can be called a complete success. It was our aim to be represented at the biggest show of the industry and get the attention of potential new customers. With a large number of new contacts from as much as twenty different countries, this aim has been fully accomplished. This and the personal meetings with existing customers concerning new, interesting projects laid the foundation for our decision to also participate in future EuroBLECH shows with an own stand.

We would like to thank all visitors for their interest in our company during EuroBLECH2010.

We look forward to seeing you again in 2012.
